Rocky Mountain School of the Arts DANCE offers a variety of dance classes for all ages and experience levels. We are a state-of-the-art facility in Cody, Wyoming where dancers can grow to achieve the highest levels of training, experience, and recognition in the surrounding area. Since 2018, we are proud to offer a Lettering Program for our Cody High School Students. Our Executive Director and Ballet Instructor is proudly certified through the world renowned Bolshoi Ballet Academy Teacher Certification Program. To see credentials of our teachers click here.

Our school year program runs from September through May with a Fall Break, Winter Break, and Spring Break. Our school year ends with a culmination of 3 different Spring Performances in May. Performance involvement depends on enrollment of classes.

Each class has a set syllabus especially designed by the executive director for each level of dance. Every Spring, families will receive letters from the executive director informing them what level dancers will be enrolled in the next fall year.

Preschool, Kindergarten & Adult Class ONLINE registrations will remain open till each session begins. If class is full, add students to the waitlist and if spots open, you will be notified in order of waitlisted.   

EARLY CHILDHOOD

3/4 year olds | 35 minutes per week Wednesdays 3:45-4:20

RMSA’s 3/4 year old dance class is a fun, all-around introduction to dance for 3-4 year olds. Children in this class develop loco-motor skills, learn rhythm, and how to behave in the structured environment of dance classes.
  • 10 minutes for tap/rhythm
  • 25 minutes for ballet/creative movement
Session 1: October 4 - November 15 (no performance). Tuition: $80 paid in-full for Fall Session Session 2: February 7 - May 8.  The 3/4 year old dance class performs a ballet dance in one show of RMSA’s annual Spring Production (purchase of costume required, approximately $70). Tuition: choice of paying $40 per month or $160 full session upfront. 

5 year old's | 40 minutes per week Wednesdays 4:20-5:00

RMSA's 5 year old dance class is a fun, engaging class where children ages 5-6 are introduced to patterns in dance and music, simple ballet sequences, and dance vocabulary.
  • 25 minutes for ballet/creative movement
  • 15 minutes for tap/rhythm
Session 1: Session 1: October 4 - November 15 (no performance) Tuition: $80 paid in full for Fall Session Session 2: February 7 - May 8.  The 5 Year old Dance class performs a ballet dance in one show of RMSA’s annual Spring Production (purchase of costume required, approximately $70). YOUTH ACADEMIES DANCE

Academy 1 | 1 h 45 min per week

Academy 1 is designed for beginning dancers; generally 1st grade. The Academy program offers students four different dance disciplines: ballet, tap, jazz, and hip hop. Jazz & Hip Hop are combined into the same class for Ac 1. It is recommended that students do participate in all four as the training is well-rounded and provides the student with the opportunity to see which styles suite their abilities, but it is not mandatory to participate in all styles. Ballet training is highly recommended to help build a dance foundation. All four disciplines are offered at a discounted rate.
  • Performances:
      • In Nov/Dec, Academy Jazz students have 3 performances during the holiday season (costumes provided).
      • In May; Academy Ballet classes perform in RMSA's Annual Masterpieces of Ballet
      • In May; Academy Jazz, Hip Hop, & Tap classes perform in RMSA’s annual Spring Production.
      • Purchase of spring costumes required. 1 for ballet; 1 for hip hop, and 1 for jazz/tap (jazz & tap share a costume); approximately $65 per costume and dancers get to keep costumes after performances.

RMSA Dance

INTERMEDIATE ACADEMIES DANCE

Intermediate dance levels differ from youth levels as the goal is to increase vocabulary and knowledge beyond foundational years.  This is accomplished with longer class times, the addition of contemporary training, and two ballet classes per week.

Academy 3 | 3 h 15 min per week

This Academy is designed for 3rd to 5th grade intermediate dancers, with 4-6 years of dance training recommended (differs for each student). Students spend approximately two years in Academy 3. The Academy program offers students five different dance disciplines: ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop, and contemporary. Jazz & Hip Hop are combined into the same class for this level. It is recommended but not mandatory that students do participate in all five as the training is well-rounded and provides the student with the foundation needed to move into the advanced placement classes. Ballet training is highly recommended to help build a dance foundation. Unlimited Class Package is available at this level.

Academy 3B | NO Ac 3b 2023-2024

Academy 4 | 3 h 45 min per week

Academy 4 is designed for students 10 years and older with 5-7 years of dance experience. Each dancer is evaluated individually for Academy 4, as these guidelines differ for each student.  Students spend approximately two - three years in Academy 4. This Academy is for the more serious dancer and is the final level offered to dancers before they move into pre-advanced placement.  Dancers who do not wish or are unable to move into pre-advanced placement classes can move into our recreational dance classes as an alternative. This Academy program offers students five dance disciplines: Ballet, Jazz, Hip Hop, Contemporary, and Tap. It is recommended but not mandatory that students do participate in all five classes as the training is well-rounded and provides the student with the foundation needed to move into the pre-advanced placement classes. Although student’s class choices can be customized, it is required that students participate in the majority of classes offered. Unlimited Class Package is available.

    • In May; Academy Ballet classes perform in RMSA's Annual Masterpieces of Ballet

Dancers in Academy 4 are eligible to audition for RMDT’s Spring Company in the Spring.

INTERMEDIATE-ADVANCE ACADEMIES DANCE

Intermediate-Advance Academies are for the serious dancer only and acceptance is based on a student’s knowledge both physically and mentally, along with technical foundation. Students must be at least 12 years or older with four years of ballet training and four years of jazz or hip hop, and two years contemporary experience.  A trial class is required before registration is accepted. Although student’s class choices can be customized, it is required that students participate in the majority of classes offered. Unlimited Class Package is available. 
  • RMSA in cooperation with Cody High School Activities Department, has developed an Independent Provider Extra Curricular Lettering Program for dance which is an option for RMSA's Cody High School dancers. 
  • Intermediate-Advance dance classes no longer perform in our Masterpieces of Ballet or Spring Production at this level. Dancers MUST audition for RMDT Spring Company in order to perform.
  • Dancers are required to audition for Rocky Mountain Dance Theatre’s Spring Company and Rocky Mountain Dance Theatre’s annual Nutcracker Production.
  • Dancers 13 years + have the option to attend RMDT’s New York Dance Experience every other year.

ADULT / RECREATIONAL DANCE

At RMSA, we believe you’re never too old to discover the joy of dance. RMSA’s Adult/Recreational dance classes offer quality training in various dance styles for anyone 16 years old and older. No previous dance experience required, no performances expected, and leotards/tights optional. Adult classes are offered in sessions throughout our school year. Classes in each session do build on each other and each session is independent of each other but as in most things, the more classes/sessions one attends; the more one will learn and foundations will form. *minimum enrollment required for adult classes to be offered. If minimum enrollment is not reached classes will be canceled and you will not be charged any tuition. NEW 2023-2024: It is so exciting that with so many returning adult students, RMSA has built a foundation for our regular adult dance class sessions! Spring of 2024, we will be offering a Beginner Basics Ballet & Tap sessions. The beginner basic sessions are intended to offer adult students an introduction OR refresher of these dance styles starting at the very beginning to help equip students with the basics, so they are prepared before attending our regular adult dance sessions.

2023-2024 Adult Tap- Wednesday's 7:00-8:00

A class for those with a basic understanding of tap or revisiting tap as an Adult. This class will focus on developing all the elements of tap dance. This includes movement, vocabulary, musicality (rhythm, timing & phrasing).  The last part of class, students will learn steps to a dance which will build onto each week.
  • Tuition is per session, charged to accounts in-full first day of class in session. No refunds.
    • Session 1: Oct 4 - Nov 15; no class Oct 25 due to TCTC Addams Family Musical Tech week (6 weeks; $70)
    • Session 2: PENDING: Feb 27-April 16; no class Mar 26 (7 weeks; $80)
Adult Tap; Beginner Basics Session; Wednesday's 7:00-7:45 This session will be for those who have no tap background and have never taken a tap class in their life OR if you'd like a refresher on the basics of tap before enrolling into our regular Adult Tap Session. The class will focus on tap terms and basic tap steps, preparing you for the regular adult tap session.
  • Tuition is per session, charged to accounts in-full first day of class in session. No refunds.
    • Session: January 17-February 7 (4 weeks; $45)

2023-2024 Adult Ballet- Thursday's; 2:45-3:45

For those with a basic understanding of ballet or revisiting ballet as an Adult. Each class will focus on alignment, foundation of technique, vocabulary, and movement quality. Follows a standard ballet class format; learning combinations at the barre, center, and across the floor.
  • Tuition is per session, charged to accounts in-full first day of class in session. No refunds.
    • Session 1: Oct 4-Nov 8;  (6 weeks, $70)
    • Session 2: PENDING Feb 29-April 18; no class Mar 28 (7 weeks, $80)
Adult Ballet; Beginner Basics Session; Tuesday's 6:15-7:15 This session will be for those who have no ballet background and have never taken a ballet class in their life OR if you'd like a refresher on the basics of ballet before enrolling into our regular Adult Ballet Session. These classes will focus on the basics of ballet terms and technique starting from the very beginning, preparing you for the regular adult ballet session. You can take this session as often as you wish.
  • Tuition is per session, charged to accounts in-full first day of class in session. No refunds.
    • Session: January 16-February 6 (4 weeks; $50)

SPACE IS LIMITED; if session is full, please add your name to the waiting list as this will help to determine future class sizes and options. RMSA has offered many styles in the past, if we receive enough interest, dance classes may be offered.
