Rocky Mountain School of the Arts DANCE offers a variety of dance classes for all ages and experience levels. We are a state-of-the-art facility in Cody, Wyoming where dancers can grow to achieve the highest levels of training, experience, and recognition in the surrounding area. Since 2018, we are proud to offer a Lettering Program for our Cody High School Students. Our Executive Director and Ballet Instructor is proudly certified through the world renowned Bolshoi Ballet Academy Teacher Certification Program. To see credentials of our teachers click here.

EARLY CHILDHOOD

Preschool | 45 minutes per week
Wednesdays 3:45-4:30

RMSA’s Preschool Dance class is a fun, all-around introduction to dance for 3-4 year olds. Children in this class develop loco-motor skills, learn rhythm and how to behave in the structured environment of dance classes.

  • 15 minutes for tap/rhythm
  • 30 minutes for ballet/creative movement

The Preschool Dance class performs in one show of RMSA’s annual Spring Production (purchase of costume required, approximately $65).

Kindergarten | 45 minutes per week
Wednesdays 4:30-5:15

RMSA's Kindergarten Dance class is a fun, engaging class where children are introduced to patterns in dance and music, simple ballet sequences, and dance vocabulary.

  • 30 minutes for ballet/creative movement
  • 15 minutes for tap/rhythm

The Kindergarten Dance class performs in one show of RMSA’s annual Spring Production (purchase of costume required, approximately $65).

YOUTH DANCE

Academy 1 | 1 h 45 min per week

  • Tuesday's 
    • 4:00-4:30 Ballet
    • 4:30-5:00 Tap
  • Thursday's
    • 4:00-4:45 Jazz & Hip Hop

Academy 1 is designed for beginning dancers, generally 1st grade.

The Academy program offers students four different dance disciplines: ballet, tap, jazz, and hip hop. Jazz & Hip Hop are combined into the same class for Ac 1. It is recommended that students do participate in all four as the training is well-rounded and provides the student with the opportunity to see which styles suite their abilities, but it is not mandatory to participate in all styles. Ballet training is highly recommended to help build a dance foundation. All four disciplines are offered at a discounted rate.

  • Performances:
      • Ballet, Jazz, Hip Hop, and Tap classes perform in RMSA’s annual Masterpieces of Ballet AND Spring Production.  (purchase of 3 costumes required for ballet, hip hop, and jazz/tap -share a costume), approximately $65 per costume).
      • Academy Jazz students have 3 performances during the holiday season (costumes provided).

 Academy 1B | 1 h 45 min per week

Academy 1B is designed for 1st or 2nd grade beginner dancers.

Academy 2 | no Ac 2 for 2020-2021

INTERMEDIATE DANCE

Intermediate dance levels differ from youth levels as the goal is to increase vocabulary and knowledge beyond foundational years.  This is accomplished with longer class times, the addition of contemporary training, and two ballet classes per week. We encourage those not wanting or able to attend 2 ballet classes to register for our Recreational Ballet Class.

Academy 2B | 2 h 15 min per week

This Academy is designed for 3rd to 5th grade intermediate dancers, with 4-6 years of dance training recommended (differs for each student). Students spend approximately two years in Academy 3.

The Academy program offers students five different dance disciplines: ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop, and contemporary. Jazz & Hip Hop are combined into the same class for Ac 3. It is recommended but not mandatory that students do participate in all five as the training is well-rounded and provides the student with the foundation needed to move into the advanced placement classes. Ballet training is highly recommended to help build a dance foundation. All five disciplines are offered at a discounted rate.

  • Performances:
      • Ballet, Jazz, Hip Hop, Tap, and Contemporary classes perform in RMSA’s annual Masterpieces of Ballet AND Spring Production.  (purchase of 4 costumes required for ballet, hip hop, contemporary, and jazz/tap -share a costume), approximately $65 per costume.
      • Academy Jazz students have 3 performances during the holiday season (costumes provided).

Academy 4 | 4 h 15 min per week

Academy 4 is designed for students 9 years and older with 5-7 years of dance experience. Each dancer is evaluated individually for Academy 4, as these guidelines differ for each student.  Students spend approximately two - three years in Academy 4. This Academy is for the more serious dancer and is the final level offered to dancers before they move into advanced placement.  Dancers who do not wish or are unable to move into advanced placement classes can move into our recreational dance classes as an alternative.

This Academy program offers students five dance disciplines: Ballet, Jazz, Hip Hop, Contemporary, and Tap. It is recommended but not mandatory that students do participate in all five classes as the training is well-rounded and provides the student with the foundation needed to move into the advanced placement classes. Students may take classes in ballet, pointe (through recommendation or audition only), tap, jazz, hip hop, or contemporary singularly or they may participate in the academy program in which all five disciplines are offered at a discounted rate.

    • Ballet, Jazz, Hip Hop, Contemporary, and Tap classes perform in RMSA’s annual Masterpieces of Ballet AND Spring Production. (purchase of 4 costumes required for ballet, hip hop, contemporary, and jazz/tap-share a costume, approximately $65-$75 per costume).
    • Academy Jazz students have 4 performances during the holiday season (costumes provided).

Dancers in their 2nd year of Academy 4 are eligible to audition for RMDT’s Spring Company.

PRE-ADVANCED DANCE

Academy 5 | 5 ½+ hours per week

Academy 5 is for the serious dancer only and acceptance is based on a student’s knowledge both physically and mentally, along with technical foundation. Students must be at least 10 years or older with four years of ballet training and four years of jazz or hip hop, and two years contemporary experience.  A trial class is required before registration is accepted. Although student’s class choices can be customized, it is required that students participate in the majority of classes offered. Unlimited Class Package is available. 

  • RMSA in cooperation with Cody High School Activities Department, has developed an Independent Provider Extra Curricular Lettering Program for dance which is an option for RMSA's Cody High School dancers. 
  • Dancers in Academy 5 are required to audition for Rocky Mountain Dance Theatre’s Spring Company, Rocky Mountain Dance Theatre’s annual Nutcracker Production, and Rocky Mountain Dance Theatre’s Wild West Show.
  • Dancers have the option to attend RMDT’s New York Dance Experience every other year. 

ADVANCED DANCE

Advance Academy is offered by audition only. Please contact the studio to set up a meeting time if you are interested in registering for classes of this level. Unlimited Class Package is available.

At RMSA, we believe you’re never too old to discover the joy of dance. RMSA’s Recreational dance classes offer quality training in dance styles for anyone 9 years old and older. No previous dance experience required.
